USB 3.0, 3.1, 3.2: same numbers, different names.

USB-IF, the body that defines the standard, has renamed the same transfer speeds several times since 2013. The result: two products with different names can be exactly as fast as each other, and vice versa.

The most important row for understanding the confusion is the first one: "USB 3.0" and "USB 3.2 Gen 1" are literally the same speed (5 Gbps) with two different names, depending on which year the product's packaging was printed.

How this happened: a short timeline

In 2013, USB-IF launched USB 3.1, which introduced a new 10 Gbps speed ("USB 3.1 Gen 2") and, to keep some consistency, renamed the existing USB 3.0 as "USB 3.1 Gen 1" — same 5 Gbps speed, new name. In 2017, USB-IF repeated the process when it launched USB 3.2, which added 20 Gbps ("USB 3.2 Gen 2x2") and renamed the two previous speeds again as "USB 3.2 Gen 1" and "USB 3.2 Gen 2." The cumulative result: the same 5 Gbps speed has had three different official names in a decade (USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 1), without the hardware changing by a single bit.

USB-IF acknowledged the problem

The very organization that defines the standard published guidelines recommending manufacturers stop using version numbers on packaging and instead use the name "SuperSpeed USB" followed directly by the real speed: SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps, 10 Gbps or 20 Gbps. In practice, not every manufacturer follows this recommendation consistently, so you'll still find both naming systems in stores and spec sheets.

How to shop without getting confused

The most reliable way to compare two products is to ignore the version number entirely and look for the Gbps figure directly, whether on the box, the spec sheet or the product description. If you only see "USB 3.0," "3.1" or "3.2" with no further context, assume the lowest possible speed for that family (5 Gbps) unless the seller specifies "Gen 2" or an explicit Gbps figure.

The cable matters too, not just the port

A 10 Gbps USB-C port connected with a cheap cable certified only for 5 Gbps (or for charging only, without high-speed data) will transfer at the lower of the two components' speeds, not the higher one. If you're buying a USB-C cable specifically for fast file transfer, it's worth checking that the cable itself states its data speed, not just the connector.
