Buying guide
Drives and memory: what to buy for your budget.
Four storage categories — hard drive, portable SSD, dual-drive USB memory and SD/microSD cards — each with three price tiers ($, $$ and $$$) plus an alternative on another platform in case Mercado Libre doesn't work for you.
How this guide is organized
Each category has three price tiers: $ is the entry option, capable and no frills; $$ is the middle ground, what we'd recommend for most people; $$$ is the option with more capacity or better performance within that same category. Below each set of three we add an AliExpress alternative, useful if you prefer that platform or if you're reading from a country where Mercado Libre doesn't have the same catalog.
Some links on this page are affiliate links: if you buy through them, ArchivoLab may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you. This does not change what we recommend — the comparison stays the same with or without a commission involved.
Portable hard drive (HDD)
The best price-per-GB option for backup and long-term archiving. It's not the fastest, but for a backup you don't plug in every day, speed matters less than capacity and cost.

Frequently asked questions
Why isn't the $$$ tier always double the $$ price?
Because the price jump between capacities isn't always linear — sometimes the top tier of a product line adds extra upgrades (speed, durability, warranty) that justify a price disproportionate to the extra capacity. Check the specs, not just price per GB.
Why use the AliExpress alternative instead of Mercado Libre?
Mainly if Mercado Libre doesn't operate in your country or the local catalog doesn't have the model you're looking for. AliExpress international shipping usually takes longer — check the estimated delivery time before buying.
How do I choose between HDD and SSD?
If the main use is infrequent backup, an HDD gives you more capacity for the same price. If you edit video or need everyday working speed, an SSD justifies the extra cost. See the general external drive guide for the full breakdown by use case.
